I don’t know about you, but funfetti anything make me happy.

Dating all the way back to my childhood, I’ve always been drawn to colorful treats filled and covered with sprinkles. So whimsical and carefree and full of innocent joy – feelings that become so much harder to come by as an adult.

I’ll jump on any excuse to make something with sprinkles (which is probably why I love cupcakes so much,) and when I stumbled upon something called fairy bread on Pinterest, I knew it would be perfect for this week’s Sunday Supper theme!

This week is all about Kid’s Favorite Recipes, and while my original plan was to share a grilled cheese variation, this fairy bread dug itself into my creative brain and I just had to use it somehow.

First things first: many of you are surely wondering what the heck fairy bread is.

This incredibly popular children’s snack hails from Australia and is often served at birthday parties…sometimes in lieu of cake.

I know. My jaw dropped, too. But to kids, this simple treat is so much more than just buttered white bread covered in sprinkles – or hundreds and thousands, as they call them.

I LOVE all things Australian (except Vegemite,) but I can’t say the idea of fairy bread got my foodie heart palpitating, even after tasting it (which by the way…it tastes exactly like you’d imagine it does.)

Incorporating into another favorite kid treat elevated it on the tasty scale.

You’ve gotta make sure you use LOTS of sprinkles. Any sprinkles will do, but I’m partial to nonpareils. Tiny, sweet, rainbow-hued orbs of joy.

They tend to bleed a bit after a while, but it doesn’t affect the flavor of the shake, except maybe making it taste happier.

As far as the shake flavor goes, this recipe is classic vanilla. You could really make it with any flavor, but the sprinkles show up so nicely against the white background.

If you’re really craving the funfetti flavor this boasts, add in some dry cake mix. The thought crossed my mind, but I didn’t have any on hand.

The fairy bread is even flexible. The standard version uses butter, but chocolate-hazelnut spread, nut butter, or margarine are also widely used Down Unda’. You can even toast it for more distinct texture.

The triangle garnishes are conveniently pre-dunked in whipped cream, so go to town dipping!

And, of course, feel free to whip up some extra fairy bread to serve on the side. Your kids will love finding this sweet treat waiting for them after their first day back to school!

I can’t help but wonder if this would taste different in Australia…

Serves: 2-3 milkshakes
Ingredients
  • 1 slice white bread, cut into 4 triangles (toasting optional)
  • 2 Tablespoons salted butter
  • Colored sprinkles
  • Corn syrup
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 teaspoons powdered sugar
  • 6 large scoops vanilla ice cream
  • 1¼ cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Pour colored sprinkles into a shallow bowl. Lightly brush the inside of 2 tall glasses with corn syrup. Scoop some sprinkles into each glass and carefully rotate them to allow the sprinkles to stick to the corn syrup. Pour remaining sprinkles back into bowl. Set aside.
  2. Spread each triangle of bread with butter, then dip them in sprinkles. Set aside.
  3. Using a hand mixer, whip heavy cream and sugar on high speed until soft peaks form. Dip edge of glasses in whipped cream and roll in sprinkles.
  4. Spoon remaining whipped cream into a piping bag and set in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  5. Combine ice cream, milk, and vanilla in a blender and pulse until smooth and thick. Carefully pour milkshake evenly into prepared glasses. Top with whipped cream, more sprinkles, and fairy bread.
  6. Serve and enjoy this Aussie-inspired treat!
